The different dance styles

Banda

is dedicated to the Gèdés, the most bizarre spirits within Haitian Vodou.
It is a boisterous fertility dance with a strong focus on pelvic movements and great entertainment value.

Djouba

The Djouba is an earthy farmer's dance with many jumps and varied step patterns, the happiness of which is transmitted directly to the dancers. His movements reflect everyday rural life, such as scenes in the field or market. Since it is one of the couple dances, it is also full of funny-teasing interactions.

Ibo

The Ibo is a dynamic, light-footed dance with many jumps. Particularly striking are the constant bobbing up and down of the chest and the fast, cutting arm movements, which symbolically refer to the severing of the chains to which the slaves were once bound.

Congo

The Congo is one of the most elegant dances in Haitian folklore. This is also how it is called the dance of the queens. A multitude of turns, which change over and over again into soft hip movements, make up its special charm. In contrast to the other dance styles, it is danced with an upright posture throughout.

Koy

The koy is one of the carnival dances and therefore has no ritual context. Carnival is colorfully celebrated in Haiti. People dance and sing on the streets for days until late at night. It is one of the most beautiful festivals in the country.

Nago

The nago is a proud, martial dance that is dedicated to the god of war Ogou.

Parigol

The Parigol is a soft, flowing dance style with elegant leg figures, which, like a mediation, repeatedly brings the dancers into contact with their own center.

Petwo

The petwo is one of the fiery dance styles of Haitian Vodou, with incredibly impressive, dynamic step combinations.

- English description: Petwo is a dance of immense energy with impressive ecstatic body movements and lighting quick steps. It is said that the Petwo spirits helped free the slaves during Haitian
revolution. This is the background for the fiery and uncompromising character of the
Petwo dance style which can bring you into a liberating frenzy.

Yanvalou

The Yanvalou is one of the most beautiful dance styles with its flowing, snake-like movements. It is consecrated to various deities, such as Erzuli Freda (goddess of love), La Sirène (mermaid - guardian of deeply hidden secrets) Agwe (god of the sea) and Damballa Wedo, who, as a cosmic snake, has a special position in the Vodou pantheos.
