I am very happy that my colleague Claude Saturne (Haiti / France) will be a guest of our dance school again. He has taken your hearts by storm as a teacher, musician and sensitive musical companion of the dance workshops. This time he will teach two drum workshops, which you can book individually or together. The heartbeat of Haitian dance is its rhythms. Dancers and musicians merge into a high-energy unit and thus inspire each other. In order to really feel the dance, it is important to understand its rhythmic fundamentals. And this is exactly where this workshop wants to start. In a playful way, you will learn simple striking techniques that will support you in playing rhythmic patterns. You will get a first glimpse into the exciting world of polyrhythm, which underlies all Haitian rhythms. Claude will show you the different voices in small rotating groups, which then together create the overall rhythm. And so you will quickly discover what a beautiful and powerful experience it is to create a rhythm together. It is very important to Claude to get you into the flow of playing with ease, so that you can enjoy the joy of making music together. With his humorous and calm manner, he understands how to take away any uncertainty from his students.
His heartfelt concern is to ceaselessly share his musical knowledge in order to let as many people as possible participate in the beauty of the culture of his homeland.

Participation requirements
You don't need any previous knowledge for the workshops, but it doesn't matter if you have knowledge of drumming.

Please inform us when you register if you do not have your own drum. We can provide a limited number and assign them in the order in which they register.

This workshop series aims to bring you closer to the wonderful diversity of Haitian dance and its ritual roots. Each individual dancing figure is an expression of a certain energy that can develop in the dancer in a beneficial way. To carefully create a protected space and connection for this is the basic idea of this series. You will learn more about the interplay of rhythm and dance, learn suitable meditative chants and of course the corresponding dance figures. We start with a flowing, gentle warm-up that prepares you holistically for the respective dances and end with a meditative cool-down.
During this workshop you can look forward to one of the most dynamic styles of the Rada dance group - the Mayi. It symbolically stands for severing the fetters of the past in order to create space for new things and to strengthen in our lives that which carries us forward. The Mayi is characterized by light-footed, but very fast-paced jumps, expressive arm movements and a permanent bobbing up and down of the sternum.


You will be accompanied musically and sensitively by Claude Saturne. His game is animated - pure energy that is immediately transmitted and simply carried away.

Claude Saturne
has been playing since childhood. Through his mother, who was an ounzi-kanzo (spiritual singer in a vodou temple), he was introduced to the ritual rhythms and chants of Haiti at an early age and gained deep insights into the practice of a vodou temple. At the age of sixteen he met the musicians of the legendary Mizik Rasin band Boukan Ginen, who shaped him musically. Numerous encounters with percussionists and vodou priests in different areas of Haiti followed, which enabled him to expand his musical knowledge. Today he has mastered over 80 rhythms and is constantly looking for new variations. In 2000 he became a member of the Badji group - under the direction of the well-known jazz saxophonist Turgot Théodat and was involved in many productions at home and abroad until 2009. At the same time he played with various Haitian artists - such as Wooli Saint Louis Jean, Belo, Bob Bovano, Samba Zao, was involved in various theater productions and directed countless musical training courses at schools, cultural centers and at the Academy of Arts in Port-au-Prince. Claude has lived in France since 2009 and has played in various productions with artists such as Erol Josué, Bob Bovano, Moonlight Benjamin. Among other things, he participated in the international project `Jazz Racines Haiti` by Jacques Schwartz-Bart.
